Walt Disney World Resort Custodial Team Creates Magic with Water Art

On National Custodian Appreciation Day and every day, team surprises guests by creating character portraits

LAKE BUENA VISTA, Fla. (October 2, 2024) – For anyone who has ever wondered how Walt Disney World Resort stays so clean and tidy – the answer is Disney cast members, especially the 4,000+ custodial cast members who make the theme parks, resorts and other locations sparkle every single day. On National Custodian Appreciation Day, it’s a great time to learn about this important role that makes magic happen for guests in some surprising and even artistic ways.

After ensuring their scheduled custodial tasks are completed, many magic makers will use their tools – a broom, dustpan and water – to draw favorite Disney characters on the pavement creating the unique Disney art form known as Water Art. Lasting as long as the sun allows, these temporary portraits of Mickey Mouse, the Hatbox Ghost, and more are always a delight for guests who see them being created.

Each Custodial cast member who completes training receives official Custodial Water Artist certification, not to mention artistic skills that impress guests and fellow cast members alike.

Walt Disney explained his approach to business by saying, “Give the public everything you can give them. Keep the place as clean as you can. Keep it friendly.” Decades later, that philosophy is still embodied by the Disney Custodial team that keeps things clean and brings something extra to guests with their artistic talents.
