Disneyland Resort Cast Member Presented with Disney Heroes Award

An act of heroism

Medical Assistant Phat Nguyen was biking home from work one day when he was confronted with the unexpected; he witnessed a car accident happen right in front of him. While Phat is a medical assistant, his role does not typically involve being a first responder to an emergency scene. Without hesitation, Phat knew in that moment that he had to act. “I was there, and I knew I had to help,” he said. “I believe anyone would have done the same thing in my situation.”

Phat first assessed the scene to ensure it was safe before approaching the overturned vehicle. He noticed a woman was trapped inside, as she was frantically banging on the sunroof of the car. Phat carefully climbed on top of the vehicle and pulled her out. Not only did he rescue the woman from her vehicle, but stayed and provided her comfort until the paramedics arrived.

Recognizing bravery

The Disney Heroes Award recognizes cast members, crew, or employees working in a non-safety role who perform extraordinary, life-saving acts on or off the clock. Since this incident occurred off property, Phat was recognized for his heroic actions where he employed the skills he has learned at Disneyland Resort. “Disney provided me with all the training, courses, knowledge and reassurance needed to not only perform my daily duties in Health Services, but also to act in that moment,” he said.

An honorable recognition

Phat is one of only two cast members in Health Services to ever receive the Disney Heroes Award. Angela Gallegos-Macias, a Health Services nurse, was the first Health Services cast member to receive the Disney Heroes Award in 2013. When she learned of Phat receiving this award, she said, “I am extremely happy for him. Phat continuously goes above and beyond the call of duty in everything he does. We are lucky to have him on our team.”

Honoring Disney Heroes
