Disney continues $100 million global commitment in collaboration with Starlight Children’s Foundation to donate mobile movie theater
Young patients at MUSC Shawn Jenkins Children’s Hospital in Charleston, South Carolina, can now enjoy a bit of Disney magic thanks to Disney Vacation Club’s recent donation of a mobile movie theater to the care center through the nonprofit Starlight Children’s Foundation.
Mickey Mouse, along with Disney VoluntEARS from Disney’s Hilton Head Island Resort, a Disney Vacation Club Resort, recently visited the hospital to celebrate the arrival of the theater with a special screening of The Lion King by Walt Disney Animation Studios in commemoration of the beloved film’s 30th anniversary. Plenty of toys, games and other Disney-themed goodies added to the special day.
“Opportunities like today give our patients the ability to play and be kids,” said Dr. Mark Scheurer, Chief of Children’s & Women’s Health at the Medical University of South Carolina. “To go to the movies with your family, albeit in a hospital, was a special thing to watch today.”
The donation of a new mobile movie theater is part of Disney’s $100 million global commitment to help reimagine the patient experience, delivering joy when it’s needed most.
Inspired by the cinema on Main Street, U.S.A. at Disneyland Resort and designed by world-renowned Disney Imagineers, the mobile movie theater offers patients and their families a place to enjoy the latest Disney storytelling through complimentary Disney+ access and the Disney Movie Moments program, which provides access to new movie titles from The Walt Disney Studios shortly after theatrical release.
The mobile movie theater is designed to be moved around the hospital to provide entertainment and activities for patients and their families. It can also be stored away when unused to maximize utility and the hospital’s limited space.
Through this ongoing collaboration with Disney and Starlight, children’s hospitals nationwide receive Disney-themed Starlight Hospital Wear, care packages as well as toys and games. Used as engagement tools by child life specialists, these programs help young patients get through the stress of medical procedures and hospitalization.
