AAU Basketball Championships Underway at ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex

The nation’s top youth players are showcasing their skills as teams from across the country compete for an AAU National Championship title. 

LAKE BUENA VISTA, Fla. (July 3, 2012) — The nation’s top youth basketball players and teams are vying for a title as the Amateur Athletic Union’s Basketball National Championships are underway at the ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex near Orlando, Fla.

Girls competition began July 3, while AAU Boys Basketball National Championships began July 10. The tournaments will continue through Aug. 4.

This year’s competition features teams such as the Lady Jets (Dallas, Tex.), coached by 2009 NBA Sixth Man of the Year and Dallas Mavericks guard Jason Terry, as well as top prospects Julius Randle (No. 2 in ESPN’s Top 100) and Matt Jones (No. 19 in the Top 100).

Notable AAU Basketball alumni include players such as NBA champion LeBron James, the 2012 NBA Draft’s No. 1 pick, Anthony Davis,  WNBA great Lisa Leslie and the 2012 NCAA Final Four’s Most Outstanding Player, Brittney Griner.

About the AAU

The AAU Boys and Girls National Basketball Championships involve more than 17,000 participants and run from July 3 through Aug. 4 at Disney. The national competition at ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex features competitors ranging from third through 12th graders.

The Amateur Athletic Union (AAU) is one of the largest non-profit, volunteer, sports organizations in the United States. The AAU partnered with the Walt Disney World Company in 1995 and serves as one of the anchor tenants to the ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex.
